Discount supermarket chain Lidl is accelerating its expansion strategy by launching 19 new stores over the next two months. This rapid expansion will result in the creation of 640 job opportunities.

As a German-owned company, Lidl has established itself as the sixth largest grocery retailer in the UK, boasting an 8.1% market share based on recent Worldpanel data. Since its inception in 1994, Lidl has grown to operate over 1,000 stores and 14 distribution centers nationwide, providing employment to more than 35,000 individuals.

The new store openings span various locations from Calne, Wiltshire, to Brough, Yorkshire. Lidl has announced that customers at these new stores can enjoy complimentary food samples and have the chance to win special prizes on opening days.

In addition to the new store launches, Lidl plans to invest £40 million in refurbishing over 70 existing branches, including the installation of new checkout counters and larger freezers.

Richard Taylor, Lidl GB’s chief real estate officer, emphasized the company’s commitment to enhancing customer experience and community impact through this significant investment. The company aims to attract more shoppers nationwide and increase its market share further.

Following a successful Christmas period with record-breaking turnover exceeding £1.1 billion and a 10% sales increase compared to the previous year, Lidl’s market position has strengthened. Recent data from Worldpanel shows a 10.2% surge in Lidl’s sales to £2.9 billion in the final quarter of last year. This growth trajectory has positioned Lidl in close competition with Morrisons, whose market share slipped to 8.3%. While Aldi remains ahead with a 10.5% market share, its sales growth rate slowed to 4.1% in the latest 12-month period.

Interestingly, Aldi was recognized as the cheapest supermarket in 2025 by consumer advocate Which?, with Lidl closely following as the second most cost-effective option for shoppers in December.

This strategic expansion and financial success highlight Lidl’s competitive positioning and commitment to providing quality products and services to its growing customer base.
