Several prominent snooker players, including Ronnie O’Sullivan, Shaun Murphy, Kyren Wilson, and Mark Selby, have shared their thoughts on a rule they believe should be revised in the sport. During an interview with TNT Sports, these top players were asked about their desired changes to snooker rules, with one specific regulation consistently highlighted.
Renowned seven-time world champion O’Sullivan, alongside other players, has advocated for a review of the contentious ‘miss’ rule, which has been a source of frustration for top players. Currently, the rule dictates that if a player fails to make contact with the designated ball, termed as a ‘miss’, due to an inadequate attempt, the referee may call a foul.
A ‘miss’ is typically called when the referee perceives that a player has chosen a more difficult shot instead of an easier escape from a snooker, or if a player underplays a shot, indicating a lack of effort.
Upon the announcement of a ‘foul and a miss’, the opponent has the choice to either reset the balls for a re-shot or leave them as is on the table. In some cases, players may find themselves continuously repeating the same shot, while their opponent accumulates points without needing to play.
Furthermore, the ‘three-miss rule’ stipulates that if a player fails to hit the correct ball three times consecutively, they automatically forfeit the frame to their opponent. This rule is a subject of debate within the sport, with concerns raised over its inconsistent enforcement, potential game delays, and confusion for casual viewers.
When questioned about potential changes to the game, O’Sullivan promptly pointed to the miss rule, suggesting a limitation of three misses. Wilson echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the need for a three-miss cap.
Selby also expressed his view, proposing a restriction where a player is allowed only three misses before conceding the frame, highlighting instances where a player in the lead can secure victory due to multiple misses by their opponent.
Former world champion Murphy took a different stance, criticizing how the miss rule can be exploited by players to their advantage, particularly through deliberate fouls.
Additionally, current world number three Neil Robertson recommended a modification where failing to contact a red ball directly would grant the opponent a free ball, aiming to expedite gameplay significantly.
Apart from the concerns regarding the miss rule, players also scrutinized the conventional dress code in snooker. Many believe that the requirement for long-sleeved shirts, waistcoats, and formal footwear should be relaxed to align with modern preferences and comfort.
Responding to the same inquiry, Mark Allen highlighted the necessity for a more relaxed dress code in the sport, emphasizing the need for modernization. Luca Brecel echoed this sentiment and added further suggestions, including the implementation of a shot clock and a requirement for players to always hit a cushion during play.
