Keir Starmer engaged in discussions with the architects of India’s electronic identification system while aiming to justify the government’s contentious proposals.

During his visit to Mumbai to meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister praised the program as a significant achievement for the country.

In 2009, the Indian government initiated the enrollment of its vast population, numbering over a billion, into the Aadhaar system, assigning them unique 12-digit identification numbers.

Mr. Starmer had a meeting with Nandan Nilekani, a co-founder of Infosys, a prominent tech company in India and a contributor to the development of the ID initiative.

Despite some individuals facing challenges accessing essential services due to technical issues within the system, the UK government is moving forward with plans to introduce a digital ID framework by 2029 for verifying individuals’ residency and employment rights in the UK.

Public support for the proposed digital ID system has waned since its announcement by the Prime Minister two weeks ago.

Responding to concerns about public opinion, Mr. Starmer emphasized the necessity of mandatory ID verification to tackle illegal work immigration issues. He suggested that voluntary ID could offer benefits, stating that it could streamline various processes, drawing inspiration from India’s successful implementation of the ID system.

Mr. Starmer’s remarks coincided with his arrival in Mumbai, where he received a warm reception from the Indian government.

Posters and billboards featuring Mr. Starmer and PM Modi adorned the streets of Mumbai, with images of their previous meeting at Chequers displayed prominently.

During a visit to a football ground in Mumbai, Mr. Starmer interacted with former England striker Michael Owen, who light-heartedly teased the PM about his support for Arsenal.

While engaging with children participating in a football program supported by the Premier League, the Prime Minister refrained from indicating whether he would urge Mr. Modi to cease purchasing Russian oil.

When probed further, Mr. Starmer reiterated the UK’s unwavering support for Ukraine and emphasized efforts to limit the activities of the “shadow fleet” concerning energy supply from Russia.
