A medical professional has raised caution for individuals using a common medication for an extended period. In the UK, omeprazole, categorized as a proton pump inhibitor (PPI), is widely prescribed, both over-the-counter and through prescriptions.

Recent NHS data reveals that a significant number of NHS prescriptions in England between 2022 and 2023 were for proton pump inhibitors, with omeprazole being one of the most commonly prescribed PPIs. It is primarily utilized to manage conditions such as heartburn and acid reflux.

Omeprazole is a medication that diminishes stomach acid levels and is commonly used to address heartburn. While certain types are available in pharmacies and shops, others necessitate a prescription.

Potential side effects of omeprazole include headaches, stomach discomfort, nausea, constipation or diarrhea, and increased flatulence. The term “long-term use” typically refers to taking a medication for three months or more, with the duration varying based on the medication type and the condition being treated.

For over-the-counter omeprazole, long-term use is defined as surpassing 14 days without consulting a healthcare provider. Conversely, prescription omeprazole is prescribed for conditions like Barrett’s esophagus and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, requiring prolonged treatment under medical supervision.

Dr. Ahmed, a British private GP, advises individuals using the medication for six months or longer to be mindful of potential risks, including gut infections, bone fractures, kidney damage, and more. Prolonged omeprazole use may elevate the risk of gut infections like Clostridium difficile (C. diff) and other enteric infections due to alterations in the gut microbiome.

Patients should use omeprazole and other PPIs judiciously and for the shortest necessary duration. If concerned about omeprazole usage and associated risks, consulting a healthcare provider is recommended to determine the most suitable treatment plan.
