WhatsApp is set to address a major issue by introducing a new feature that allows users to use unique usernames instead of sharing their phone numbers. This change aims to provide users with more privacy and control over their communication on the platform.
Sharing phone numbers can sometimes feel intrusive, especially when connecting with new acquaintances like classmates, neighbors, or group members. With the upcoming update, users will have the option to share a username instead, making it easier to chat without revealing personal phone numbers.
In addition to enhancing user privacy, the new feature will also improve the security of group conversations. Users engaging in community chats or social groups can now participate without immediately exposing their phone numbers to strangers.
To ensure users have a chance to secure their preferred usernames, WhatsApp has announced that reservations can be made ahead of the full launch. Given the platform’s massive user base, early reservations are encouraged to secure desired usernames before they are taken by others.
To reserve a username, users simply need to update WhatsApp to the latest version and navigate to Settings > Account > Username. The feature will be rolled out gradually over the next few months, with users being notified when usernames become available in their respective regions.
