Legal organizations have criticized Conservative and Reform politicians for using language that endangers lawyers. In a rare move, six legal groups, representing 250,000 lawyers, have raised serious concerns about the hostile rhetoric directed at legal professionals in the course of their duties.
The controversy stems from a peculiar display during a recent Conservative conference speech by Robert Jenrick, where he brandished a judge’s wig as a prop, vowing to prevent any political activists from assuming judicial roles. This action drew sharp criticism from the government, accusing Jenrick of undermining British values and threatening the country’s institutional integrity.
Jenrick also announced plans to abolish an independent public body responsible for setting guidelines for judges and magistrates in England and Wales, citing its inadequacy. Additionally, Tory leader Kemi Badenoch has repeatedly voiced dissatisfaction with what she perceives as “activist lawyers.”
Allegations of a two-tier justice system have been recurrently made by the Conservatives and Reform UK. In response, several legal bodies, including the Bar Council of England and Wales, the Law Society of England and Wales, and others, issued a joint statement expressing alarm over the threats faced by legal professionals and their families.
The statement emphasized the essential role of legal professionals in upholding justice and impartiality, highlighting the harmful impact of politicized attacks on the legal profession. The escalating intimidation, including violence, death threats, and vandalism targeting lawyers and judges, has raised serious concerns about the safety of those upholding the rule of law.
The legal groups reiterated that lawyers represent their clients independently and play a crucial role in ensuring fair access to justice. In a stark warning, they emphasized that no one, including politicians, is exempt from the law’s protections, underscoring the principle that justice must prevail for all.
