Donald Trump has issued a deadline for Hamas to agree to a deal that would bring an end to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The U.S. president emphasized that if the proposed agreement is not accepted, severe consequences will follow. Trump conveyed this message through a post on Truth Social, stating that a deal with Hamas must be reached by Sunday evening at 6 P.M. in Washington, D.C. time. He warned of dire repercussions if this “last chance” agreement is not finalized.

Recently, the White House unveiled Trump’s plan to resolve the conflict, which involves establishing a transitional governing body in Gaza called the “Board of Peace.” This board, led by Trump and supported by other members including former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, aims to bring stability to the region. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed Israel’s agreement with the terms of the proposal.

Despite ongoing negotiations, Israeli forces have continued their offensive in Gaza, targeting locations like the Al-Falah school in Gaza City. Casualties, including first responders, have been reported. The conflict has resulted in significant loss of life, with thousands of Palestinians killed in Gaza since the initial Hamas attack.

Hamas has responded cautiously to Trump’s plan, indicating a need for further discussions on certain aspects. Key mediators such as Egypt and Qatar have also emphasized the importance of continued negotiations to achieve a lasting resolution. Trump’s comprehensive 20-point plan requires Hamas to release hostages, relinquish control in Gaza, and disarm in exchange for various concessions, including humanitarian aid and international oversight of Gaza’s governance.

Various political figures, including UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, have expressed support for Trump’s initiative to end the conflict and provide assistance to the people of Gaza. However, not all parties are in favor of the proposed plan. Ziad Al-Nakhaleh, leader of Palestinian Islamic Jihad, criticized the agreement as favoring American and Israeli interests and perpetuating aggression against Palestinians.

A recent UN-commissioned inquiry has accused Israel of committing acts of genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. The commission identified several actions that align with the international legal definition of genocide. Navi Pillay, the commission’s chair, stated that there is clear evidence of intent by Israel to destroy the Palestinian population in Gaza, meeting the criteria outlined in the Genocide Convention adopted in 1948.
