If you’re among those who store milk in the fridge door, you might want to reconsider, according to a leading kitchen appliance manufacturer. Many of us tend to place bottles of milk in the fridge door, particularly since flimsy milk bottles often leak when laid down.
However, experts at Beko, a leading kitchen appliance company, advise against storing milk in the fridge door, pointing out that this practice results in wasted milk and additional expenses. Beko says that UK households typically throw away an estimated £250 worth of food per person each year, amounting to £1,000 for a family of four.
The company highlights that the way we organize our fridges contributes to this problem. Salah Sun, the head of product Management at Beko UK, emphasizes that effective fridge organization is vital in reducing food waste. Sun states: “The way we organise our fridges can make or break our efforts to reduce food waste.
“Most people don’t realise that poor fridge organisation isn’t just about aesthetics – it directly impacts food longevity and your household budget.”
Creating designated zones within your fridge is the key to extending the shelf life of your food, reports the Express. Sun elaborates: “Temperature fluctuates within your fridge, so storing items in the right zones is crucial.
“The bottom shelf, being the coldest, is perfect for raw meats, while the middle shelves maintain ideal conditions for dairy and prepared foods.
“The door, often used for milk, is actually the warmest area due to frequent opening. “We recommend keeping more stable items like condiments and drinks in the door compartments, moving milk to the middle shelf where temperatures remain more constant.”
But it’s not just about cutting down on waste when it comes to organising your fridge effectively.
“When you can see and access everything easily, you’re more likely to cook at home and make healthier choices,” Sun points out.
“Plus, maintaining optimal storage conditions means your fresh produce lasts longer, reducing both waste and shopping frequency.”
