Lando Norris secured his place in history as the 11th British driver to claim the prestigious Drivers’ Championship title by finishing third in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The 26-year-old entered the race weekend leading the World Championship with a 12-point advantage over defending champion Max Verstappen, with his teammate Oscar Piastri also in contention, trailing Verstappen by four points.
Despite missing out on an earlier opportunity to clinch the championship in Qatar due to a strategic error by McLaren, Norris faced intense pressure heading into the Abu Dhabi race. Qualifying set the stage for his championship bid as he outpaced Piastri to secure a front-row start alongside Verstappen.
During the race, Norris initially lost a position to Piastri but managed to hold off challenges from Charles Leclerc. A strategic pit stop on lap 16 helped him regain track position ahead of Leclerc after a series of decisive moves through the field.
A penalty for Tsunoda further aided Norris, who then focused on managing his lead over Leclerc while Piastri made his final pit stop. With a comfortable gap and solid tire management, Norris maintained his position at the front, eventually crossing the finish line to claim the championship title.
After a seven-year journey in Formula 1, Norris’s triumph marked a significant achievement for British motorsport, reaffirming its dominance on the world stage.
