The chief aide of Nigel Farage has engaged in a heated dispute with the Green Party leader regarding a former Reform head who accepted bribes from Russia.

Zia Yusuf was challenged by Zack Polanski on BBC Question Time concerning Nathan Gill, the ex-leader of the party in Wales, who admitted to bribery charges related to supporting Russia.

Reform has distanced itself from the disgraced politician, a former UKIP and Brexit Party MEP, awaiting sentencing next month. Polanski questioned Yusuf’s earlier statements about Farage and Reform being unaware of Gill’s identity, citing a photo of Farage with Gill post-Brexit.

Yusuf defended himself, asserting he never met Gill and assumed his role after the incident. He reiterated this stance during a previous BBC interview. When confronted with images of Farage and Gill together, Yusuf explained that Farage encounters numerous individuals annually and cannot be held accountable for everyone’s actions.

During the debate, Yusuf emphasized Farage’s extensive interactions with people each year, dismissing claims about Gill’s visibility within the party when Farage was not the leader.

Polanski pressed Yusuf on Gill’s presence in a photo with Farage, to which Yusuf replied that Farage meets many individuals in such pictures. Host Fiona Bruce intervened to shift the conversation away from the topic.

Polanski later shared a photo of Gill and Farage on Twitter, with Gill previously acknowledging Farage as “Mr. Brexit.” Gill served as a UKIP and Brexit Party MEP from 2014-2020, leading UKIP Wales while Farage was the national leader.

Gill briefly led Reform UK Wales in 2021, spearheading their election campaign before departing. He admitted to accepting bribes from a figure linked to the Russian security services, advocating for Putin-associated media channels in the European Parliament and on TV.

After Gill’s case, a police commander emphasized the seriousness of an elected official promoting narratives favorable to Russian interests, highlighting the importance of safeguarding democratic values and national security.
