Police officers encountered a unique excuse from a speeding driver who was clocked at 107 miles per hour in his convertible Corvette. The man, identified as Michael Stanek, attempted to justify his high speed when pulled over in Palm Coast, Florida.
A deputy observed Stanek weaving through traffic on a 70mph section of Interstate 95 before conducting the traffic stop. Body camera footage captured Stanek exiting his vehicle, being handcuffed, and standing beside his sports car for a pat-down.
Questioned about his reckless driving, the officer inquired, “Going 107, weaving in and out of traffic, why were you driving so fast?” Stanek’s response was unexpected as he mentioned having an urgent appointment with his barber and simply apologized when pressed further.
Florida recently implemented a ‘super speeder’ law, which criminalizes speeds exceeding 50mph over the limit or 100mph. Consequently, the deputy informed Stanek that he would be spending the night in jail for endangering lives by weaving through traffic at excessive speeds. Stanek faced arrest for his dangerous driving behavior.
In a separate incident, a court heard about a driver who removed the black box from his vehicle before fatally hitting a schoolgirl in Cardiff. Christopher West, speeding in a 30mph zone, struck 15-year-old Keely Morgan, who tragically lost her life.
West, who was reportedly showcasing his driving skills to passengers before the tragic accident, received a 16-month jail sentence for causing death by careless driving and driving without insurance. Keely’s family expressed disappointment in the sentence, feeling it did not adequately address their loss.
The courtroom reaction was emotional, with outbursts of disgust as the verdict was delivered, leading some of Keely’s family members to leave the proceedings.
