Tennis icon Rafael Nadal’s uncle and former coach, Toni Nadal, has proposed significant changes to reduce the intensity in the sport. Toni, aged 64, suggests that using smaller rackets could lower the risk of injuries for players dealing with a demanding schedule. However, such modifications may disrupt the current hierarchy as players would need to adjust their techniques.

Toni has criticized the current state of tennis, highlighting a focus on sheer power and speed. He is known for being critical of this trend within the sport.

According to Toni, the increasing speed of the ball is a major factor contributing to injuries, rather than the number of matches played. He emphasized the lack of strategic players in today’s game compared to players like Federico Coria or Gaston Gaudio.

He suggested slowing down the pace of the game to reduce injuries caused by rapid and forceful movements, emphasizing the need for smaller rackets. Rafael Nadal has long supported this idea, believing it would make tennis more accessible for amateurs while making the game less physically demanding for professionals.

Toni expressed concerns that tennis authorities might not heed his advice, as they prioritize maintaining the status quo to favor top players. Drawing a parallel with football’s evolution, he highlighted how rule changes in football, such as the back pass to the goalkeeper and the introduction of the yellow card, led to a significant transformation in the sport.

While Toni guided Rafael to numerous Grand Slam victories, an ATP Finals title eluded them due to the tournament’s surface not being clay. Toni believes that resistance to change in tennis has hindered his nephew’s success in the ATP Finals, emphasizing the need for adaptation similar to football’s evolution in the 1990s.
