If you are experiencing illness accompanied by a fever, it is possible that you have contracted one of the newly identified strains of Covid that are currently circulating during this autumn season. Among these variants, XFG, known as Stratus, and NB.1.8.1, referred to as Nimbus, are the most prevalent in the UK at present.

Experts have noted recent genetic modifications in the virus, which could potentially increase the likelihood of infections. While these new variants do not seem to present a greater threat than previous forms of Covid or cause more severe symptoms, there is a distinct indication that may suggest the presence of these strains.

Viruses naturally evolve over time as they spread among populations. When these changes result in significant differences, the new versions are classified as variants. A sharp, “razor blade” sore throat is believed to be a distinctive sign of these latest variants.

However, aside from a sore throat, Covid can manifest with a range of symptoms, including headaches, coughing, nasal congestion, and fatigue. Individuals who suspect they have contracted Covid are advised to avoid contact with vulnerable individuals and remain at home whenever possible. If leaving the house is necessary due to symptoms, wearing a face covering is recommended.

Practicing regular handwashing, using tissues and disposing of them properly in bins can help reduce the transmission of Covid and other respiratory illnesses. For those experiencing a sore throat, staying hydrated and consuming honey may help alleviate symptoms.

Recent data indicates a rise in Covid rates across the UK, particularly affecting the very young and elderly populations. Individuals aged over 75 are eligible for a free Covid vaccine through the NHS, which offers substantial protection, even against the new variants, according to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).

As winter approaches, the UKHSA encourages people to schedule vaccinations against flu and RSV, another common winter virus, as cases are anticipated to increase. The agency emphasizes the importance of getting vaccinated on time, especially for those eligible.

While reinfections with Covid are possible, even in individuals who have recently recovered from the virus or have been vaccinated, these reinfections are typically mild. It is crucial to be aware that even when feeling unwell, individuals can still transmit the virus to others. Although free Covid tests are no longer widely available, they can be purchased at pharmacies.
