Russian assaults on Ukraine’s power infrastructure reveal a deep-seated animosity towards Ukraine, casting doubt on the possibility of reaching a substantial peace agreement.

The lack of a coherent military strategy beyond deploying successive waves of Russian troops and making slow progress is coupled with a misguided focus on targeting Ukrainian civilians.

Throughout nearly four years of resisting this abhorrent full-scale invasion, Ukrainian civilians have displayed remarkable resilience, defying the odds in the face of harsh winter conditions and enduring a shortage of heating. Despite facing immense challenges, they have remained resolute in their defiance against Putin’s offensives.

The strategy of attacking civilian resources with expensive missiles and drones has proven ineffective in breaking Ukrainian resolve. Instead, it highlights Putin’s callous disregard for any commitments he has made regarding the conflict in Ukraine, particularly to President Donald Trump.

Trump had stated that Putin had agreed to refrain from targeting Kyiv’s energy supplies by leveraging severe winter temperatures to undermine civilian morale. However, the temporary halt in attacks, brokered by Trump, only delayed the inevitable escalation of hostilities.

By postponing attacks, as purportedly agreed with Trump, Putin was essentially postponing the inevitable, culminating in a brutal assault on Ukraine. While Putin has been buying time and deflecting peace negotiations, his options are running thin.

As talks are expected to resume in Abu Dhabi, Putin’s recent attack is an attempt to project strength and dominance. However, it is unlikely to advance his strategic objectives in the conflict, serving more as a symbolic gesture to Trump’s negotiating team.

This move reflects Putin’s growing desperation and lack of regard for President Trump’s attempts at diplomacy. The ongoing mocking of Trump by the Kremlin underscores the difficult position in which Kyiv finds itself, facing a critical decision in responding to Putin’s deceptive tactics.

Kyiv must now choose between confronting Washington’s misplaced trust in Putin’s false assurances or continuing to buy time in the hope that Ukrainian forces can hold the line despite limited resources and weaponry, showcasing their resilience and bravery on the battlefield.

President Volodymyr Zelensky can only hope for increased support from Europe and a breakthrough that compels Washington to abandon its misguided approach towards the Kremlin’s pursuit of victory over Kyiv.
