Scientists in Vermont have been intentionally infecting thousands of trees with Dutch elm disease this summer. The initiative, led by researchers from the U.S. Forest Service and the Nature Conservancy, aims to develop a new generation of elms that could be resistant to the fungus transmitted by bark beetles. This disease has been devastating elm populations in the U.S. and Canada for many years. The ultimate goal is to restore areas where elm trees once flourished, lining streets and thriving along riverbanks.

Gus Goodwin, a senior conservation planner with The Nature Conservancy, expressed the profound loss of trees due to Dutch elm disease over the years. The experiment in Vermont seeks to create a strain of trees that can withstand the disease, similar to ongoing efforts in Canada to combat the expanding threat of Dutch elm disease.

The spread of Dutch elm disease has had a significant impact on various regions, such as Fredericton, once known as the “City of Stately Elms.” The disease decimated thousands of trees in the 1960s and 70s, leaving only around 1,000 mature elms remaining. Professor Anthony Taylor from the University of New Brunswick has witnessed the disease affecting even the surviving elms on his property, highlighting the ongoing challenges.

Bark beetles carrying Dutch elm disease spores play a crucial role in spreading the fungus, which disrupts the water-conducting tissues of elm trees, leading to their eventual demise within a few years of infection. Efforts to control the disease involve the prompt removal of infected trees to prevent further spread. However, past practices of removing healthy elms alongside infected ones may have unintentionally impacted the overall resilience of the elm population.

As cities across North America face the threat of Dutch elm disease, experts are working on strategies to enhance the resilience of elm trees. Projects like the Elm Recovery Project in Guelph and initiatives in Fredericton involve crossbreeding and cloning disease-resistant trees to combat the spread of Dutch elm disease. These long-term efforts require patience, as it may take years to develop and assess the effectiveness of resistant tree strains.

The ongoing experiments and research in Vermont and other locations aim to create a sustainable solution to Dutch elm disease, ensuring the survival of elm trees in the face of this persistent threat. By developing disease-resistant tree varieties, scientists and foresters hope to restore the once-thriving elm populations and preserve the ecological benefits these trees provide.
