Parts of British Columbia in Canada are experiencing severe drought conditions this summer. In Bessette Creek, water restrictions were imposed to safeguard salmon populations due to extremely low water levels. Temporary protection orders for the Salmon River watershed were initially issued in July, then withdrawn briefly in early August due to heightened wildfire risk, and subsequently reinstated by the end of August.

Bob Crandall, the treasurer of the Cowichan Lake Salmonid Enhancement Society on Vancouver Island, expressed concerns about the decreasing water levels in the 16 streams connected to Lake Cowichan that the society oversees. To mitigate the impact, the society conducts fry salvage operations, manually rescuing fish from dehydrating rivers and relocating them to other water bodies.

Crandall emphasized the need for human intervention to address the ecological challenges caused by human activities. While these efforts are being embraced by communities as a necessary measure, scientists caution that such interventions have limitations and may not offer a sustainable long-term solution.

Collaborating with the Ts’uubaa-asatx Nation and volunteers, Crandall undertakes the task of relocating fish species like salmon, trout, and char to more suitable habitats. However, the changing climate is making this work increasingly challenging, with streams drying up further upstream than before, necessitating greater effort in relocating the fish.

The process of moving fish involves the use of aerators and bubblers to ensure adequate oxygen supply, along with nets for transportation. Crandall highlighted the physical challenges of transporting water, fish, and equipment across dry streambeds during hot weather conditions. He stressed the importance of preserving fish species within the ecosystem rather than allowing them to perish.

Efforts by the Ts’uubaa-asatx Nation in fry salvage operations play a crucial role in relocating fish and monitoring drying streams using drones. The partnership between the Nation and the Society is vital for the success of these conservation projects, which are essential for safeguarding salmon populations, a keystone resource for the community.

In France, similar rescue initiatives are facing constraints due to severe drought and extreme heat. Jean-Pierre Faure of the Fédération de Pêche du Rhône mentioned the ineffectiveness of fish relocation efforts in the wake of unprecedented weather events. He emphasized the need for ecosystem restoration and improved water management practices to address the challenges posed by climate change.

Faure highlighted the adverse effects of rising water temperatures on fish health and survival, stressing the urgency of prioritizing long-term conservation strategies over short-term interventions like fish relocation. He also pointed out the high costs and logistical challenges associated with large-scale fish relocation efforts in extensively dried-up river systems.
