A 12-year-old girl tragically lost her life after engaging in risky social media stunts despite her mother’s pleas for her to stop. Zemfira Mukhtarov, from Brooklyn, posted daring videos on TikTok, such as lying on train tracks, before her fatal accident. Her mother tried to warn her of the dangers involved but was unsuccessful in dissuading her daughter.
The young girl, along with her 13-year-old friend, was found unconscious near a subway station in Williamsburg in the early hours of the morning. Both girls were later pronounced dead. Zemfira had developed an obsession with performing dangerous stunts, which she often shared online, including subway antics and trespassing in abandoned buildings.
Authorities reported that up to 15 youths were involved in the subway incident that led to the tragic deaths. Zemfira’s father initiated a fundraiser to cover her funeral expenses, gathering a significant amount in donations. City officials are issuing warnings against subway surfing, emphasizing the dangers of these activities exacerbated by social media influence.
In a separate incident, an 11-year-old British boy passed away due to participating in a harmful social media trend known as ‘chroming.’ The boy suffered a suspected cardiac arrest after inhaling toxic substances at a friend’s house. Chroming involves inhaling chemicals like paint or solvents to induce a temporary euphoric effect, but it can lead to severe health complications, including heart attacks or suffocation.
Family members of the British boy called for increased safety measures on social media platforms to protect vulnerable users from dangerous challenges like chroming. While a TikTok spokesperson denied any association between chroming and their platform, concerns persist regarding the influence of social media on promoting risky behaviors among young individuals.
