A medical professional has cautioned that signs indicating the onset of dementia may manifest before memory issues arise. Dementia is a progressive condition affecting brain function, leading to a decline in cognitive skills, including memory, reasoning, speech, and emotions over time.

Research indicates that over 944,000 individuals in the UK are living with dementia, with one in 11 people aged 65 and above affected by the condition.

The prevalence of dementia is increasing due to longer lifespans, as reported by Surrey Live. While there is no cure, early diagnosis is crucial for establishing a treatment plan and medications to effectively manage symptoms.

Dr Johannes Uys, practicing at Broadgate General Practice in London, has highlighted various early indicators that could signify the onset of dementia. Although memory challenges are commonly associated with dementia, Dr. Uys suggests that physical symptoms may precede memory loss in some cases.

He outlined four early signs to be vigilant for, which are often linked to specific types of dementia such as Parkinson’s disease dementia. Additionally, he emphasized that symptoms vary from person to person, with each individual experiencing dementia uniquely.

“If any of these early signs are noticed in oneself or a loved one, seeking a healthcare professional for a thorough assessment is essential,” he advised.

“Early detection and intervention can assist in symptom management and providing necessary support,” he added. Risk factors for dementia vary, with some like age being unavoidable, while others can be mitigated through lifestyle changes during younger years.

Engaging in regular exercise and maintaining a balanced diet are known to reduce the risk of dementia. Additional beneficial adjustments include weight management, smoking cessation, reduced alcohol intake, and cholesterol control.

The NHS recommends reducing saturated fats, salt, and sugar intake while increasing fiber consumption for potential benefits. The GP further shared the four early signs to be alert for:

Timely diagnosis of dementia enables prompt assistance to patients. Nevertheless, a recent survey by the Alzheimer’s Society revealed that only one in three individuals consult a doctor within the first month of detecting dementia symptoms in themselves or a loved one.

A survey involving 1,100 participants showed that many hesitate to seek help due to uncertainty about whether the symptoms are related to the condition or simply aging signs. It is important to recognize that dementia is not a natural aspect of aging, and if experiencing increasing forgetfulness, especially beyond 65 years old, consulting a GP is advisable.
