CBC’s reality show, The Assembly, is set to make a comeback for its second season, featuring six new celebrity interviews and a larger cast of over 30 neurodivergent and autistic adults posing the questions.
Among the celebrity guests facing the spotlight are actors Hudson Williams (Heated Rivalry), Zach Galifianakis (The Hangover), and Jay Baruchel (This is the End). The season will also showcase personalities like actor and Miss Universe Canada Ashley Callingbull (North of North), singer-songwriter Lights, and three-time Olympic hockey gold medalist Marie-Philip Poulin.
Each celebrity will undergo an ask-anything interview, delving into direct and unpredictable questions that transcend the typical promotional narratives and often touch on personal topics.
The show’s allure lies in its mix of returning and new interviewers, creating a space for genuine exchanges, awkward moments, humor, and instances of true connection. Described by the creative team as a platform for revelations and laughs, sometimes within the same conversation.
The format of The Assembly is inspired by the French show Les Rencontres du Papotin, which debuted in 2022 with notable guests such as Killing Eve star Camille Cottin and French President Emmanuel Macron. The concept has since gained international traction, with adaptations featuring renowned figures like actors Antonio Banderas, Michael Sheen, David Tennant, and Stephen Fry.
The first season of CBC’s The Assembly earned accolades, including a Canadian Screen Award for best direction, three Telly Awards, a Golden Sheaf Award at the Yorkton Film Festival, and a Banff Rockie Award nomination.
CBC’s Jennifer Dettman, executive director of unscripted content, noted the positive response to the first season, highlighting the interviewers’ refreshing and honest approach. Executive producers Stephen Sawchuk and Sean De Vries promise more of the show’s heart, humor, and authentic dialogues in the upcoming season.
Produced by Vancouver-based Small Army Entertainment, The Assembly Season 2 premieres on Sunday, Nov. 1, at 9 p.m. ET on CBC TV and CBC Gem. Exclusive “producer’s cuts” will be accessible only on CBC Gem starting at 9 a.m. ET on the same day.
