An individual who carried out a brutal attack on a teacher has been commended for displaying regret for the assault. Kieran Matthew, now 18 years old, was released by the court after leaving his teacher Carol Shaw unconscious and injured on the ground. The teacher’s life was in jeopardy, and she sustained permanent scarring from being forcefully thrown head-first onto a concrete surface.

During a case reassessment, Sheriff Tim Niven-Smith noted Matthew’s expression of remorse and his emerging awareness of the impact on the victim, despite his learning challenges. The sheriff acknowledged Matthew’s efforts to learn how to avoid impulsive violent actions that led to the incident. The court will conduct another review in December, according to the Daily Record.

Matthew, diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and a low IQ, confessed to assaulting and harming the teacher. The distressing incident occurred following a disagreement over changing arrangements before a physical education class. Despite being placed under social work supervision for three years and ordered to attend intervention programs like anger management, Matthew’s actions left the St Paul’s Academy teacher with a visible scar and emotionally traumatized, preventing her from returning to work.

The court described the assault as severe, with significant repercussions for the victim’s life. Matthew’s sentence was reduced for his early guilty plea, resulting in a community-based order and mandatory courses to address his behavioral issues. The teacher’s injuries required medical attention, including stitches and a CT scan, highlighting the severity of the attack and the potential life-threatening consequences.

Matthew’s defense attorney highlighted his ongoing emotional challenges and difficulties in managing his responses to stressful situations. The court recognized the need for specialized support and interventions to help Matthew address his emotional regulation and behavioral issues.
