Digital veteran ID cards are now available on smartphones, catering to nearly two million veterans who can conveniently download them from an official government app. These digital cards aim to streamline access to benefits like housing support, discounts, and personalized healthcare services for military personnel. While the digital cards are optional, physical cards will still be accessible to veterans.

This initiative marks the Government’s introduction of digital ID cards, with plans for a pilot program for digital driving licenses later this year. Despite initial discussions about mandatory digital ID cards to address illegal migration, concerns have been raised regarding data protection and civil liberties.

Ian Murray, the minister for digital government, views the veterans’ ID cards as a test case to address public concerns and demonstrate the efficacy of such credentials. The digital cards can be accessed through the GOV.UK One Login app, which already upholds high-security standards.

Although discussions about the GOV.UK wallet have been ongoing, its full implementation is expected at a later stage when more digital credentials, like digital driving licenses, are developed. The foundation for a digital wallet has already been integrated into the One Login app, ensuring robust security measures.

To start with, the veterans’ cards will be usable in person, such as for discounted museum entry, with online usability expected in the following months. Technology Secretary Liz Kendall emphasized the importance of supporting veterans and simplifying their access to public services through digital solutions.
