A mother has issued a cautionary alert following her son’s choking incident on a pull ring from a can that went undetected on hospital X-rays. In April of this year, Holly Morrison, residing in Belfast, recounted how her 10-year-old son Michael began choking while playing video games. Despite being advised against putting objects in his mouth, Michael, who has autism and ADHD, would often chew items due to sensory challenges. Holly rushed him to the hospital, but the X-ray did not reveal the ring pull in his lungs.
Concerned as Michael continued to experience wheezing, Holly sought advice on TikTok, where fellow parents enlightened her that ring pulls are only visible on specific X-ray scans. Despite multiple visits to the hospital, medical professionals initially failed to detect the ring pull in Michael’s lungs. After several consultations with the GP, including prescriptions for an inhaler, oral steroids, and antibiotics, Michael’s condition did not improve.
During a subsequent visit to the A&E, the family was informed that the presence of a ring pull was unlikely. Holly, who had been sharing her experience on TikTok, received critical information that ring pulls require a specific type of X-ray for detection. After conducting personal research, she discovered a report in the British Medical Journal confirming that standard X-rays might not capture ring pulls due to their density.
Holly persisted and advocated for further examination. Eventually, a consultant confirmed her suspicions after conducting a specialized X-ray that revealed the ring pull. Following this ordeal, Holly ensured that the Belfast Trust educated its staff on this discovery. She urged other parents to persist with medical professionals if they have concerns, emphasizing the importance of advocating for their children’s health.
Dr. Julie-Ann Maney, a Consultant in Paediatric Emergency Medicine at the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children, acknowledged the rare but hazardous nature of swallowing a can ring pull. She expressed gratitude for the new insights that could benefit medical staff. Michael’s case was thoroughly reviewed by specialists, shared with healthcare professionals in various departments, and utilized for educational purposes.
Holly’s proactive approach led to improved awareness within healthcare facilities, prompting the dissemination of crucial information to medical professionals across Northern Ireland. Her perseverance and diligence in ensuring her son’s well-being serve as a testament to the importance of advocating for proper medical care for children in need.
