England’s Mark Wood may face a longer absence due to injury despite a strong performance in the Ashes. Joe Root’s remarkable unbeaten century propelled England to a commanding position at The Gabba on the first day of the second Test match in Australia.
Root’s masterful 135 not out led England to a score of 325-9, with contributions from Zak Crawley (76) and Jofra Archer (32 not out). Despite some successful moments for Australia, the day belonged to Ben Stokes’ team.
However, concerns arose off the field as Wood, nursing a knee injury, may also miss the upcoming Adelaide Test after providing a concerning update on his condition. Wood, who bowled 11 wicketless overs in the first Test, mentioned it would be touch-and-go whether he would be fit before Christmas.
The 35-year-old expressed uncertainty about playing in Adelaide, hinting that a return might be more likely in Melbourne or Sydney. Wood’s history of injuries includes a long absence due to an elbow issue before his recent knee problem.
Former England captain Michael Atherton highlighted Wood’s importance as a key fast bowler and expressed disappointment over the setback. Wood’s absence in Brisbane led to Will Jacks replacing him in the lineup.
In response to Root’s standout performance, Mitchell Starc shone for Australia, claiming 6-71 with the pink ball. England’s strategy shifted in Brisbane with the inclusion of spin option Jacks for added depth in both bowling and batting.
