Thunder Bay’s Krista Scharf, a well-known curler, is set to lead Team Despins as skip during the upcoming 2026-2027 season. Scharf’s previous team dissolved in March after a successful ten-year run that included multiple appearances at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts. Following the disbandment, Scharf, who has represented both Ontario and Northern Ontario at the Scotties 12 times, clinching two silver and two bronze medals, decided to return to competitive curling with Team Despins.
Expressing her excitement, Scharf shared that she had been missing the sport and was pleasantly surprised when Team Despins approached her to join their ranks. The team required an additional player due to Nicole Westlund-Stewart’s ongoing back injury recovery. Scharf sees this opportunity as a way to maintain a balance between competitive play and her personal life.
Acknowledging the challenge of adapting to a new team dynamic, Scharf aims to bring her experience to support her new teammates. Team Despins has its eyes set on competing for the Northern Ontario championship and securing a spot at the 2027 Scotties, with the addition of Abby Deschene to the lineup. Scharf emphasized the importance of rigorous practice to achieve their goals, highlighting the dedication required for success in the upcoming season.
Robyn Despins will play third, Deschene at second, Rebecca Carr at lead, and Westlund-Stewart will serve as the team’s fifth member alongside Scharf. The team is gearing up for intense training sessions leading up to the January competition, with Scharf’s competitive spirit driving her commitment to aiding her teammates and striving for excellence on the ice.
