A medical professional has issued a caution that frequent illnesses may necessitate a visit to a general practitioner (GP) as recurring infections could indicate a more serious underlying issue. Dr. Leen Tannous, a GP practicing in both the NHS and private sector, conveyed this advice via a social media post.

In a video posted on her Instagram page, @doctor.leen, the London-based doctor raised the question of when recurrent infections should raise concerns about a potentially serious health issue. Dr. Tannous explained that while most individuals experiencing regular coughs, colds, or sinus infections are likely dealing with common triggers like allergies, asthma, or stress, severe or persistent infections coupled with additional symptoms such as night sweats or weight loss should prompt a GP consultation.

Dr. Tannous, known for her interest in functional medicine, emphasized that recurrent infections could indicate a compromised immune system. She suggested exploring factors like chronic inflammation, gut health, and stress levels to address potential underlying causes.

In summary, Dr. Tannous stressed that while most recurrent infections are not indicative of cancer, they should not be overlooked. Conventional medicine focuses on identifying serious conditions, whereas functional medicine delves into strengthening the immune system comprehensively.

The NHS advises against seeking medical attention for a cough unless it persists for over three weeks, accompanied by weight loss or a weakened immune system. Common causes of a cough include smoking, heartburn, allergies, and infections. If a cough worsens suddenly or is accompanied by severe symptoms like chest pain or difficulty breathing, urgent medical attention is recommended.
