British Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick is facing criticism for proposing a plan akin to Donald Trump’s style, potentially diminishing the Supreme Court’s independence to cater to influential politicians. During a recent conference speech, the Shadow Justice Secretary vehemently attacked judges, vowing to reinstate ministerial control over judicial appointments and denouncing the influence of political activists within the judiciary.
Jenrick, a prominent Conservative figure, brandished a judge’s wig as a prop, emphasizing his commitment to prevent judges with affiliations to open borders charities from influencing legal decisions. However, the Government rebuked Jenrick, accusing him of jeopardizing British values by undermining established institutions and traditions crucial to the nation’s unity.
Former Supreme Court Justice Lord Sumption criticized Jenrick’s initiative to dismiss “activist” judges, cautioning that granting politicians more authority over the judiciary could mirror the U.S. system, where the Supreme Court has become subservient to the President, paving the way for autocratic behavior. Sumption highlighted the importance of maintaining an impartial judiciary independent of political influence to preserve public trust in the legal system.
Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Secretary David Lammy accused Jenrick of disregarding core British democratic principles by challenging the independence of judges. Lammy stressed that allowing politicians to dictate judicial appointments represents a dangerous erosion of democratic norms.
In his address, Jenrick castigated judges for blurring the line between adjudication and activism, asserting his intention to realign the judiciary’s role to uphold parliamentary and ministerial supremacy, accountable to the citizens. He announced plans to restore the Lord Chancellor’s authority in appointing judges, aiming to eliminate political bias within the judiciary and restore public confidence in the legal system.
