Keir Starmer has confirmed that he did not extend birthday wishes to Russian leader Vladimir Putin, in contrast to the warm greetings received from India. Arriving in Mumbai for discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Starmer reiterated the UK government’s commitment to increasing pressure on the Kremlin. Meanwhile, Modi, despite his government’s ongoing purchase of Russian oil amid the Ukraine conflict, conveyed well wishes for Putin’s health and longevity.

In a statement on social media, Modi expressed gratitude for Putin’s efforts in strengthening India-Russia relations over the years. As Putin celebrated his 73rd birthday, Starmer clarified that he had not sent any birthday messages to Putin and reiterated the UK’s focus on curbing Russian energy supply through initiatives like the Shadow Fleet, in collaboration with other nations.

During his visit to India, Starmer pledged to promote British companies and enhance ties with Modi’s administration. Accompanied by a delegation of 125 business leaders, university officials, and other dignitaries, Starmer aimed to foster economic relationships. Notable participants included prominent entities such as Rolls Royce, British Telecom, and British Airways, among others. This initiative followed a trade agreement signed between Starmer and Modi earlier, projected to contribute significantly to the UK economy annually.

Looking ahead, Starmer emphasized the importance of the trade deal with India, highlighting the growth opportunities it presents for British businesses. As India emerges as a key global economy, Starmer emphasized the potential benefits for British companies in terms of expanded options, opportunities, and domestic employment.

The endeavor to attract British firms coincided with the Prime Minister’s praise for the business sector in his recent Labour conference address, addressing past fiscal decisions. Notably, the trip to India also saw advancements in air travel connectivity between the two nations, with British Airways announcing additional flight routes and IndiGo launching a new service between Delhi and Manchester.

The delegation accompanying Starmer to India included Business Secretary Peter Kyle, investment minister Jason Stockwood, and Scottish Secretary Douglas Alexander, underscoring the collective commitment to bolstering trade relations with India. Kyle expressed optimism about the rapid progress in trade discussions with India, culminating in the substantial business delegation visit to Mumbai.
