During the post-Christmas period, the government is cautioning households about increased hacker activities. Many individuals may have received ‘smart’ devices as Christmas gifts, adding to the already vast array of internet-connected electrical items in UK homes. These devices range from smart speakers, fitness trackers, and security cameras to modern appliances like fridges, thermostats, and even certain household items like kettles, washing machines, and toys.
The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), a division of GCHQ, has raised concerns that insecure devices could potentially be exploited by criminals to infiltrate a household’s network or launch cyber attacks. Recent analysis of millions of connected homes revealed an average of 10 daily attacks on devices, with security tools successfully fending off approximately 1,736 threats every minute.
In an effort to enhance cybersecurity, the government is urging households to invest a few minutes in setting up two-step verification on new device accounts or enabling automatic updates. Baroness Lloyd, the Cyber Security Minister, emphasized the importance of securing smart devices for a worry-free festive season, allowing families to focus on creating cherished Christmas memories.
Jonathon Ellison, NCSC’s director for national resilience, advised users to ensure their newly acquired smart devices are equipped with essential security measures. Following the NCSC’s guidance on smart device usage and activating two-step verification on critical accounts are recommended steps to safeguard homes and personal information.
The government asserts that the UK is at the forefront of safeguarding families against cyber threats. Regulations such as the Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure standards mandate that all smart devices sold in the UK meet fundamental security requirements, including the prohibition of default or easily guessable passwords.
