A father who decided to name his sons after iconic James Bond villains as a form of “revenge” against his wife believes his children will not face bullying due to the prevalent use of unconventional names like Tarquin in their upscale Notting Hill neighborhood in London.
William Woodhams and Annabel Simpson, along with their sons Stanley Beats Scaramanga Woodhams and Basil Groove Blofeld Woodhams, reside in the affluent Notting Hill area. Woodhams expressed dissatisfaction with his wife’s choice of Stanley’s middle name, influenced by her DJ career and a character from the BBC sitcom “People Just Do Nothing.” In response, he added the name Scaramanga, a nemesis of Bond in “The Man with the Golden Gun,” to the mix.
Upon the arrival of baby Basil, the couple announced the news in The Times, attributing the name inspiration to Ernst Stavro Blofeld, a recurring antagonist in the James Bond series. Despite the unorthodox names, the father is confident that his sons will not face any issues at school.
Woodhams shared his perspective on the naming choices, highlighting his past experiences with ridicule for his own middle name and emphasizing his belief in supporting his children’s unique identities. He noted the prevalence of unconventional names like Tarquin in their neighborhood, suggesting that his sons will fit in well.
The father’s comments follow a recent incident where a new mother inadvertently named her baby after a dog food brand, causing distress upon realizing the association. The mother sought advice on the name Pierina, a family name with sentimental value, despite concerns raised by family members about potential mispronunciations.
