Gary Lineker “fired shots” at Jamie Carragher after the Liverpool legend claimed he was part of the best football podcast. Carragher was joined by Thierry Henry, Kate Scott and Micah Richards for the midweek coverage of the Champions League on CBS Sports Golazo.
In a segment where Carragher committed the cardinal sin of going on his phone live on air, Richards quizzed: “Do you feel like you’re at the top of your game at the moment, Jamie?”
The former Reds defender, referencing his other roles on Sky Sports‘ Monday Night Football and the Stick to Football podcast, confidently replied: “Well, I’m on the best Champions League show, I’m on the best Premier League show and I’m on the best podcast.”
Richards, part of the rival The Rest Is Football podcast, took issue and stated: “Numbers say differently.” Carragher continued: “Wages or are we talking numbers?”
That prompted Richards to say: “We’re talking numbers. We’re talking listeners.” Before his colleague responded: “I get stopped in the street about my podcast.”
Their back-and-forth was unsurprisingly brought up on the latest episode of The Rest Is Football by host Lineker, who said in a tongue-in-cheek manner: “Before I go on, did you have a little squabble with Jamie Carragher? He tried to pretend that they’ve got the best football podcast?”
Richards explained: “Podcast wars, basically. I was actually giving him a little bit of credit. I said ‘you’re at the top of your game as a pundit’ and he said he was on the best Premier League show, the best Champions League show and the best podcast.
“I had to pull him up about the podcast, I had to do that.” Lineker interjected: “I would hope so, Micah.” Richards continued: “When it comes to numbers, we do the numbers don’t we?”
Match of the Day presenter Lineker brutally pointed out: “Yeah, they’re languishing miles behind, and that’s okay. We like to have a bit of competition in there but you can’t be the best podcast when you stand there talking over each other all the time.” That resulted in laughter from Alan Shearer and Richards saying: “Gary’s firing shots!”
Ramping up the hilarious podcast feud, Lineker added in a condescending tone: “But they’re a YouTube show, we know that. Because you can’t have five people around a table doing podcasts, it’s just too many – doesn’t work.”
Lineker’s production company – Goalhanger – currently dominates football podcasts in the UK with its The Rest Is Football show. It is followed by the likes of Stick to Football, That Peter Crouch Podcast and Fozcast – The Ben Foster Podcast.
Stick to Football is part of Gary Neville’s The Overlap podcast series and regularly includes the likes of Roy Keane, Ian Wright, Jill Scott and Carragher, among other high-profile names such as Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes.
