We all know it’s essential to get our five a day, but imagine if one of those portions cost a whopping £150.
Imagine how good a fruit would have to taste for you to drop that amount of money on it. But that’s exactly what YouTuber Robbie Knox did when he compared a £1 Asda melon to a £150 Harrods one.
On his TikTok, where he posts with username @megarobbieknox, he shared a video of him with musician Alfie Indra as they compared the cheap supermarket melon to the extortionately priced one, as Alfie said he “loves melon”. But did the Harrods one pass his taste test?
Well, the taste test was done before they realised which melon was from which shop. So, there was one melon on the screen, which they referred to as looking “dry”, and the other looked “juicy”.
When they tried the melons, the one they said looked dry turned out to be as dry as they assumed it would be. And the other, Alfie described as the “best melon” he’d “ever had,” which is big praise.
Robbie and Alfie said the second melon was “amazing” and “insane”. Robbie said: “It’s so amazing. It’s like they combined what it is to be a melon into one melon”.
They guessed that the “juicy” melon was from Harrods, with Alfie saying it surely couldn’t be the Asda melon – and he was right.
The £150 Harrods melon knocked both of their socks off with its delicious flavour – and they couldn’t get enough. Robbie got the box out and put it on the table, saying: “This, Alfie, is a Japanese Crown melon”.
A Japanese Crown melon is a premium fruit from Japan, prized for its succulent texture, sweet flavour, and distinctive aroma. It’s often even referred to as the ‘king of fruits’ because it’s so delicious.
The fruit is so fancy that it even comes with a “velvet melon cushion” as part of the box’s design – much to the men’s amusement.
Robbie then explained that one tree grows one of these fruits, so “all the nutrients are concentrated into one melon,” hence why they’re so juicy.
But Alfie didn’t know the price of the melons at this point, and when Robbie asked him how much did he think it was, he cringed. “How much did you pay for this one [Asda]?” Alfie asked. Robbie said it was £1.88, but Alfie was concerned that the expensive melon had cost £5,000 when Robbie offered him another taste.
Alfie guessed that the Harrods melon was £85, saying: “And that’s just me being nuts,” assuming it was going to be cheaper. Robbie asked Alfie how much he’d pay, and he said: “I would genuinely pay like £25 for that”. But he was mortified when he learned that it would set you back a whopping £150.
Robbie joked that the £150 melon had “completely ruined melons” for them because they’d never eat a melon like that again.
In the comments, someone wrote: “I don’t care how juicy it is, a melon should not cost £150”. Another joked: “Do Harrods have a yellow sticker section?”
