Ellen Pompeo’s new true crime series has landed on UK screens earlier than anticipated, and Grey’s Anatomy fans will be thrilled about its streaming home.
Good American Family marks Pompeo’s first major role away from the hit medical drama. She portrays Kristine Barnett, an American woman who adopts an orphan with a rare form of dwarfism, before growing suspicious of her real age.
The eight-part series was initially pegged to release in the UK on May 7, almost two months after its USA premiere. However, the first five episodes of the drama are now available to stream, with the following three set to air every Wednesday.
Grey’s Anatomy viewers will be thrilled to learn that the drama is streaming on Disney+, which is also the UK streaming home for Grey’s.
Although she has played the part of Meredith Grey for over 20 years, Pompeo takes on a role worlds away from the surgeon in this drama.
Its plot is based on the unsettling true story of Ukrainian-born girl Natalia Grace (played by Imogen Faith Reid), whose adoption led to sinister allegations of fraud.
Disney+ now costs as little as £4.99 a month, but members can get 12 months for the price of 10 by paying for a year upfront on the ad-free Standard or Premium plans.
Disney+ is the only place to stream hit shows like Rivals, The Bear and Shōgun, plus blockbuster franchises like Star Wars and Marvel.
Natalia was taken in by Midwestern couple Kristine and Michael Barnett (played by Mark Duplass) when she was around seven years old. The duo later claimed that she was actually a grown woman masquerading as a child.
In 2012, two years after the adoption, the Barnetts successfully petitioned for an Indiana court to change Natalia’s birth year from 2003 to 1989, aligning with their claim that she was an adult.
Genetic testing conducted when Natalia was in her early 20s later proved that she was indeed a child at the time of her adoption. The limited series delves into this complex story through “multiple points of view, as a means to explore issues of perspective, bias, and trauma.”
Pompeo isn’t the only notable star on the cast, she is joined by Dulé Hill (Suits), Christina Hendricks (Good Girls), Sarayu Blue (Expats) and Jenny O’Hara (My Sister Sam).
The drama was created by Katie Robbins, who helmed the hit Apple TV+ series Sunny, starring Parks and Recreation actress Rashida Jones.
Good American Family is streaming on Disney+ from April 9
