The Canadian federal government has announced plans to gradually cease activities at its research facility located in Indian Head, Saskatchewan, within the next year. As part of this transition, the seed increase unit will be relocated to the Saskatoon Research and Development Centre by 2028. This unit is responsible for producing and distributing breeder seeds to certified seed growers for multiplication and sale.

This decision follows a recent agreement between the federal and provincial governments aimed at preserving the Indian Head and Scott research farms from closure. Under the terms of the memorandum of understanding, control of the land will be transferred to the province as the federal operations wind down. Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada emphasized its ongoing commitment to supporting the Canadian seed sector, ensuring breeder seed supply, and maintaining high standards for pedigreed seeds.

The fate of the Indian Head and Scott research farms post the seed unit relocation remains uncertain. Provincial Agriculture Minister David Marit stated that negotiations are ongoing between the provincial government and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada regarding the future use of the remaining land. Additionally, collaboration with the Saskatchewan agricultural industry is underway to devise a strategy for the research farmland.
