Rory McIlroy’s five word admission about divorce U-turn as he and wife put on united front

Must read

As golfer Rory Mcllroy sets his sights on winning his first Masters, he’ll be supported every step of the way by wife Erica Stoll and their four-year-old daughter Poppy.

The family will be putting on a united front in Augusta, Georgia, where they were seen together at the traditional par-three curtain raiser on the eve of the Masters, after what appears to have been a bumpy time in Rory and Erica’s eight year marriage.

In May last year, Rory, 35, shocked fans after filing for divorce in Florida, just one day after earning his fourth Wells Fargo Championship win. At the time, it appeared there was no hope for the couple, with the filing describing their marriage as “irretrievably broken”. Then, shortly after the bombshell announcement, Rory was spotted without his wedding ring while competing at the 2024 PGA Championship in Louisville.

By June however, it seemed the couple had patched up their differences, and the filing was withdrawn, mere days before the US Open.

Addressing the complicated situation at the time, Rory confirmed: “We have resolved our differences”. Addressing whispers about the state of their marriage, Rory told The Guardian: “There have been rumours about my personal life recently, which is unfortunate. Responding to each rumour is a fool’s game.

He continued: “Over the past weeks Erica and I have realised that our best future was as a family together. Thankfully we have resolved our differences and look forward to a new beginning.”

Rory also opened up about the topic in the latest season of Netflix’s golfing documentary Full Swing, which aired back in February, revealing that they were “happy and moving forward”. He shared: “Thankfully everything has worked out for the best and we’re happy and moving forward and I can’t wait for what lies ahead.”

Last month, Rory scooped his second Players Championship victory, with Erica and Poppy joining him at TPC Sawgrass. The couple put on an affectionate display, even sealing the triumph with a kiss.

Rory also spoke about the joys of fatherhood ahead of the tournament, reflecting: “Yeah, look, it definitely makes the lows a little easier to take. The highs are going to be high anyway, but it’s amazing — I think especially after The Players, I think it was the first time that she sort of realised what I did, which was really cool. Also a little scary at the same time.”

He continued: “It’s amazing that I can share these things with her and with Erica and, the day after The Players, she went into school and there was a couple of kids that had said some stuff to her, and she came home to me that day and said, ‘Daddy, are you famous?’

“I said: ‘It depends who you talk to!’ It’s a bit of a double-edged sword. You have to temper the expectations sometimes. As everyone knows that’s had children, it’s an amazing addition to life, and it’s great that she’s here this week.”
