A man was apprehended while trying to pay for a burger and side dishes using a phony £700 note at Michael’s Bar and Grill in Manchester, Missouri. The individual, driving a Lexus, handed over a counterfeit $1,000 (£743.93) bill to settle the bill for a meal worth about $40 (£29.76). Upon returning with the change, the server discovered the fake currency left behind as the man had vanished.
The bogus bill was identified as “ancestor money,” which holds symbolic significance in Chinese culture for ceremonial purposes and is not valid as legal tender. The restaurant, vigilant due to previous dine-and-dash incidents, captured the attempted fraudster on camera.
According to Kristina Moriarty, an employee at the restaurant, such incidents have occurred frequently, prompting the owners to implement enhanced security measures including surveillance cameras, license plate readers, and facial recognition technology.
In response to the rising occurrences, the restaurant has taken to social media to expose dine-and-dash offenders, with the Lexus driver being the latest individual highlighted on their Facebook page. The culprit, upon seeing his photo online, returned to settle the outstanding bill and issued an apology.
Dawn Lamb, a bartender with 32 years of experience, emphasized the impact of such incidents on workers’ earnings, stressing the importance of deterrence through public exposure to prevent future occurrences.
