A recent study has raised concerns about the effectiveness of Tramadol, a commonly prescribed pain medication. While Tramadol is often used to manage moderate to severe pain post-surgery or due to serious injuries, researchers now suggest that its potential risks outweigh its limited benefits for chronic pain conditions.
Published in the BMJ Evidence-Based Medicine journal, the study indicates that Tramadol may have a minimal impact on chronic pain relief with uncertain evidence to support its use. Lead author Dr. Janus Jakobsen from the University of Southern Denmark highlighted the questionable benefits of Tramadol and warned about potential harmful effects associated with the drug, given its opioid nature and the risk of addiction.
Examining 19 clinical trials involving over 6,500 individuals with chronic pain, the research found that while Tramadol provided some pain relief for conditions like neuropathic pain, osteoarthritis, chronic low back pain, and fibromyalgia, its overall effectiveness fell below clinically significant levels. Notably, Tramadol use was linked to serious side effects such as cardiac events including chest pain, heart disease, and congestive heart failure.
With over 16 million Tramadol prescriptions in the US in 2023 alone, the study’s conclusions emphasized the need to minimize the use of Tramadol and other opioids, especially in light of the alarming number of drug-related deaths. Dr. Jakobsen recommended exploring alternative treatment options before resorting to Tramadol, underscoring the importance of individualized care for chronic pain management.
The study findings come in the wake of a tragic incident where a teenager, Will Horley, lost his life due to a fatal reaction to Tramadol during a night out. His mother, Kim Webster, shared the heartbreaking story to caution others about the risks associated with drug experimentation, highlighting the unpredictability and potential consequences of recreational drug use.
