Timpson, a popular shoe repair chain, has introduced a new service for trading in mobile phones. Teaming up with musicMagpie and AO, the retailer now allows individuals to bring their unwanted smartphones to Timpson stores and receive immediate cash payment. A recent survey revealed that 73% of UK adults possess at least one unused smartphone at home, with an average trade-in value of approximately £250, totaling an estimated £10 billion in unused smartphones.
While various online options exist for reselling devices, Timpson aims to cater to customers who prefer face-to-face interactions. The survey also highlighted that 68% of people prefer to trade in their devices in person, with one in four emphasizing the importance of immediate payment.
The trade-in service, initially trialed by Timpson and musicMagpie four months ago, is now available in over 1,300 Timpson stores across the UK. John Roberts, the CEO of AO World, emphasized the convenience of the service, stating that customers can swiftly receive cash for their old smartphones at numerous Timpson locations. This initiative marks the beginning of a promising partnership between the companies.
Steve Oliver, the managing director of musicMagpie, expressed excitement about expanding the service to 1,300 Timpson stores, enhancing convenience for customers. Sid Hubbard, Timpson’s group director, emphasized the trusted and customer-friendly nature of Timpson’s staff, extending the high street experience. Hubbard highlighted Timpson’s longstanding commitment to repairing goods and expressed pleasure in offering smartphone trade-in services in collaboration with musicMagpie.
