A significant fire has erupted at an industrial estate in response to witnesses describing their residences vibrating from a massive explosion that occurred on the premises.

The fire broke out at the Groundwell Trading Estate in Swindon earlier in the evening, prompting emergency services to conduct an evacuation and establish a sizable safety perimeter. Startling images captured at the scene display intense orange flames engulfing the area with dense smoke billowing into the sky, visible from afar. Authorities are currently present at the scene, advising local residents to remain indoors and keep windows shut. There is uncertainty regarding any injuries resulting from the fire. Witnesses reported hearing a loud bang preceding the outbreak of flames, with one individual mentioning their home shaking from the impact.

A representative from Wiltshire Police stated, “We are currently managing a critical situation at Groundwell Industrial Estate, Crompton Road. An explosion has taken place in one of the industrial units, and we are collaborating with ambulance and fire services to ensure the area’s safety.”

They added, “A large safety cordon has been put in place, and Cricklade Road between Queensfield and Thamesdown Drive is currently inaccessible. Nearby residents are advised to stay indoors, close all windows, and avoid the vicinity of the industrial estate for their safety.”

“We are actively working on evacuating the immediate area around the industrial estate, although residential properties do not need to evacuate at this time. The A419 road remains open, but any changes will be promptly communicated.”

Councillor Jim Robbins mentioned that a council response team is cooperating with emergency services to address the explosion at Groundwell. “Efforts are underway to ascertain the circumstances, assess potential injuries, and secure the area,” he stated. “Please allow the Emergency Services the necessary space to conduct their operations.”

Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service reported, “DWFRS is currently on site at a significant fire in the Groundwell Industrial Estate in Swindon. Please steer clear of the area and keep doors and windows shut to prevent smoke infiltration. A local substation has been isolated due to the incident.”
