A teenager, aged 16, has been sentenced to eight months in jail for throwing a 15kg sofa over a shopping center balcony, narrowly avoiding hitting a shopper. The incident occurred at Westfield shopping center in Stratford, East London, on March 1. The boy, who cannot be named due to his age, admitted to recklessly causing a public nuisance and criminal damage.
Footage of the incident went viral on social media before the police apprehended the teenager and his friend. During police questioning, the boy dismissed the incident as insignificant and confessed to frequently engaging in similar pranks, including throwing objects off bridges. In court, the prosecutor emphasized the serious risk of severe injury posed by the boy’s actions, highlighting his reckless behavior and lack of concern for public safety.
The boy’s lawyer acknowledged his client’s immaturity and described the incident as a misguided attempt to impress others. Despite the teenager expressing remorse and seeking a second chance, the judge deemed the offense severe enough to warrant a custodial sentence. The judge emphasized the intentional nature of the act and the potential psychological impact on witnesses, leading to the imposition of an eight-month detention and training order.
