Iran’s potential new hardline billionaire leader is drawing attention from Israel due to his defiant stance, indicating Tehran’s aggressive posture. Motjaba Khamenei, a war veteran, is expected to resist pressure from Israel and the US, aiming to escalate conflict and spread violence across the region. He managed to evade military strikes for five days by navigating Tehran’s extensive underground tunnel network, rumored to be hundreds of meters deep.

The appointment of Motjaba, the second son of the late Ayatollah Khamenei, was expedited after two virtual meetings of Tehran’s Assembly of Experts, following the bombing of the intended voting site in Qum by the US and Israel. Despite his substantial wealth from a property empire, he is favored by hardline supporters as the leader of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Despite his affluent lifestyle, Motjaba, heavily sanctioned by the US, shares his late father’s anti-western views. His wife’s death in an air strike further fueled his animosity towards Israel and the US. While projecting a tough image, he also holds significant assets in the UK and Swiss bank accounts. As the second son of Khamenei, he has long been seen as a potential successor and is well-versed in theocratic principles, having wielded power behind the scenes and maintaining close ties with the IRGC.

Having served in Iran’s armed forces during the Iran-Iraq war, Motjaba has established strong bonds with the IRGC. Despite never holding an official position in his father’s regime, he exerts influence in Iran’s political and security spheres. Considered a target by Israel, Motjaba faces threats due to his association with the Iranian regime’s anti-Israel agenda and his perceived role in regional destabilization efforts.
