While we are diligent about cleaning common areas like the kitchen and bathroom, a cleaning expert emphasizes that the dirtiest spots in our homes often go unnoticed.

Despite our focus on regular cleaning tasks such as mopping and wiping surfaces, experts caution that certain overlooked areas in UK households can harbor significant amounts of grime and bacteria.

From neglected nooks to frequently touched surfaces, these unnoticed areas can accumulate dirt, bacteria, and unpleasant odors, compromising the overall cleanliness and hygiene of your home, even when it appears clean at first glance.

Andrew Haydon, a home cleaning expert at Simply Plastics, suggests that a simple weekly wipe-down of these commonly missed spots can have a significant impact. He stresses that cleaning doesn’t have to be a daunting task or expensive.

By paying attention to these commonly ignored areas just once a week, you can greatly improve your home’s cleanliness and hygiene with minimal effort, according to Haydon.

For instance, that little corner that often gets neglected can become a breeding ground for bacteria due to food remnants and spills that accumulate rapidly, leading to unpleasant smells. Haydon recommends a quick wipe down with warm soapy water or a mild disinfectant to prevent the buildup of grime.

Similarly, frequently handled items like buttons can harbor germs and require regular cleaning. Using antibacterial wipes or a damp cloth with soapy water can effectively eliminate germs and maintain cleanliness.

Accumulated cooking splashes and spills behind cupboards can lead to stubborn stains over time. Haydon recommends using a warm soapy cloth or a soft brush to tackle these marks effectively.

Areas prone to mold and mildew, such as bathroom corners and tile grout, are often overlooked during quick cleaning sessions. Haydon highlights the importance of addressing these areas regularly to prevent hidden mold spores that can impact air quality and hygiene. Using a grout cleaner or a baking soda paste weekly, followed by thorough drying, can help maintain cleanliness.

Furthermore, the rubber seals around fridge doors can accumulate food residues and sticky substances, leading to unpleasant odors and reduced efficiency. Haydon advises wiping these seals with warm soapy water and ensuring they are properly dried to prevent mold growth and maintain the fridge’s performance.

To prevent extensive cleaning sessions, Haydon recommends adopting a “little and often” approach. Using washable mats behind bins, keeping wipes handy near light switches, and adding splash guards behind cookers and sinks can help manage daily spills and maintain cleanliness effectively.

Haydon emphasizes the importance of regular light cleaning to prevent dirt buildup and ensure a fresher and healthier home environment.
