Jessica Pegula, known for being one of the wealthiest figures in the tennis world, has proposed that Andy Murray might have taken on the role as Novak Djokovic’s coach out of sheer curiosity. In a surprising move just months after retiring from professional tennis in the summer of 2024, Murray shocked the tennis community by announcing his decision to assist the 24-time Grand Slam champion.

The two tennis icons collaborated ahead of the Australian Open, where Djokovic reached the semi-finals before withdrawing due to injury. It was later confirmed in May that their coaching partnership had come to an end by mutual agreement, only six months after they joined forces.

During an episode of The Players Box podcast with Jennifer Brady, Desirae Krawczyk, and Madison Keys, Pegula, with a net worth of nearly £15 million and a potential inheritance of £5.5 billion, suggested that Murray may have been intrigued by the chance to gain insights into Djokovic’s mindset.

Pegula remarked, “I think he was so intrigued. I believe he thought, ‘This is so unusual, I’m so curious. Why do you want me to coach you but I’m also so intrigued by how your mind works and your thought process on the court.’ And I definitely observed them interacting.”

Keys also found the Murray-Djokovic partnership unconventional, supporting Pegula’s theory that Murray sought to understand what makes Djokovic a formidable opponent.

Despite their separation, both Murray and Djokovic have shared their perspectives on their coaching collaboration. Murray revealed in an interview with The Times in June that he saw the coaching opportunity as a unique chance to explore a different aspect of the sport, while Djokovic expressed gratitude for the experience and the insights gained from working with Murray.

Djokovic explained that their decision to part ways was mutual and that despite the partnership not achieving the desired results, he valued the learnings and discussions they had during their time together.
