Legends like Prescott, Harman, and Rayner have been exemplary Labour deputy leaders, embodying the essence of our party in government with a strong mandate and a prominent role in the cabinet.

Stepping into such significant roles is a challenge I embrace as the new deputy leader. My commitment is to support this Labour government while ensuring it upholds the core principles that inspired party members to join in the first place.

I aim to make the reduction of child poverty a central mission of both this government and my tenure as deputy leader. I pledge to achieve this goal within this Parliament, empowered by the mandate and determination to make a tangible difference.

My personal experience of growing up in poverty has been the driving force behind my political journey.

In my role as Education Secretary, advocating for working-class families has been a top priority. Initiatives such as free breakfast clubs, expanded free school meal programs, and increased childcare support demonstrate my commitment to creating a fairer system.

I have proven that I am willing to challenge entrenched interests to prioritize the needs of working people, like redirecting resources from private schools to benefit state education.

The transformative impact of a Labour government is evident in its ability to uplift disadvantaged children, illustrating the power of governance over mere protest.

Echoing Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s recent address to the Labour conference, effecting change requires more than just vocal demands—it necessitates strategic action within established frameworks.

Labour governments, unlike opposition parties, have the capacity to implement policies that directly impact poverty levels, showcasing the imperative of holding government authority.

In the current landscape, with pressing issues like child welfare and public service sustainability, internal discord within Labour is a luxury the party cannot afford.

Unity within the party is paramount, as fractured political entities are not positioned to succeed electorally or effect meaningful change. The upcoming critical elections demand a cohesive Labour front to counter the threat posed by divisive figures like Farage.

Facing the challenge of Farage and the far-right, I, as deputy leader with a clear mandate, am committed to unifying the party, championing Labour values within the government, and leading the charge against such detrimental influences.
