Labour’s Lucy Powell, a contender for the deputy leadership position, has emphasized her ability to communicate tough messages to Downing Street in order to prevent a recurrence of the benefit cuts debacle.

The MP for Manchester Central has called for a recalibration following a challenging first year for Labour, highlighting that important policies like workers’ rights and rail nationalization are being overshadowed by errors.

During an interview at a pub in her constituency with the Mirror, Powell expressed her intention not to criticize Keir Starmer but stressed the need for Labour to assert its position and clearly articulate its values to the public.

Voting for the new deputy leader commences on Wednesday, with Powell competing against Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson. Powell, who was removed as Commons Leader in a reshuffle, presents herself as a representative for the party, contrasting with Phillipson, who is perceived as the government’s preferred choice.

Powell emphasized the necessity for a strategic shift within the party, aiming to make better decisions, improve messaging, and convey a coherent narrative about Labour’s identity and objectives.

When asked about her capacity to deliver tough messages to Downing Street, Powell affirmed her readiness to engage in challenging conversations while highlighting the importance of aligning with the values of the Labour party.

Powell stressed the significance of addressing the disillusionment in politics and reclaiming control of the political narrative from external influences such as Nigel Farage. She underscored the need for Labour to present a distinct perspective on the country’s challenges and its approach to addressing them.

Regarding the two-child benefit limit issue, Powell criticized the decision to discipline MPs who voted against the policy, emphasizing the importance of aligning actions with Labour’s core values and priorities in tackling social inequalities.

Powell advocated for a clearer stance on policy priorities, emphasizing the urgency of addressing deep-seated inequalities and demonstrating a commitment to fairness in the upcoming Budget.

The voting period for the deputy leadership election will run until October 23, with the results scheduled to be announced on October 25.
