Matches Fashion is poised for a comeback next year after being purchased following its administration. The high-end fashion retailer faced a collapse in March 2024, reportedly owing over £210 million to luxury designer brands such as Gucci and Anya Hindmarch.
Previously owned by Frasers Group, Matches was acquired by Joe Wilkinson and Mario Maher, founders of the luxury shopping app Mile. The duo has now taken over Matches and its in-house brand Raey, integrating them into the new luxury group Hulcan, as reported by Vogue Business.
In an interview, Mr. Maher emphasized the intention to preserve Matches’ legacy of curation and exclusivity while introducing new perspectives. Mr. Wilkinson highlighted the significance of integrating brands, media, and technology to create a forward-looking luxury ecosystem that enhances brand discovery and customer experiences.
Matches, known for its online presence and a few physical stores in London, had faced financial challenges leading up to its collapse. Frasers Group acknowledged the business’s persistent losses and the impracticality of restructuring it to achieve viability, ultimately leading to Matches’ administration.
Despite the setbacks, Frasers expressed its ongoing commitment to the luxury market and its brand partnerships. The transition to new ownership under Joe Wilkinson and Mario Maher marks a pivotal moment for Matches Fashion, promising a revitalized approach to luxury retail.
