Kindle users received a prior warning about potential restrictions on their e-readers, leading to concerns over access to new books. The deadline for this block is fast approaching, set to take effect on May 20, 2026. The impact of this update will primarily affect older models like the Kindle 5 and the Kindle Paperwhite 1st Gen, preventing the addition or reading of new content.

For users unsure if their device will be affected by this Amazon update, a list of models facing blockage from the book store is provided below:

– Kindle 1st Generation (2007)
– Kindle DX and DX Graphite (2009 and 2010)
– Kindle Keyboard (2010)
– Kindle 4 (2011)
– Kindle Touch (2011)
– Kindle 5 (2012)
– Kindle Paperwhite 1st Generation (2012)

It is important to note that existing book libraries will remain accessible, ensuring that owners do not lose access to books they already possess. However, once the deadline hits, the affected Kindles will essentially become read-only devices.

Amazon stated, “Starting May 20, 2026, customers using Kindle and Kindle Fire devices released in 2012 and earlier will no longer be able to purchase, borrow, or download new content via the Kindle Store.” These models have been supported for at least 14 to 18 years, but technological advancements have rendered them incompatible with future support.

While this change may disappoint owners of older Kindles, Amazon is alleviating the impact by offering discounts on new purchases. Affected customers are being informed and can avail a 20 percent discount on selected new Kindle models, coupled with a £15 eBook credit.

With a variety of new Kindle options available, including standard models and Colorsoft devices with color screens, users have ample choices. Those seeking more than just book access may find the Scribe range appealing, featuring a digital pen for note-taking, document annotation, and book markup.
