Gary Barlow says he’s decided to ‘pace himself’ when it comes to drinking after learning his lesson during one very boozy morning in South Africa.
Recalling the incident, which took place while filming for his ITV show, Gary Barlow’s Wine Tour, the Take That singer told Mirror that he’s made the mistake of not pacing himself in the past, sharing: “I was standing in the middle of a vineyard with a winemaker and glasses of red, white, rose and sparkling – it was ten past nine in the morning.”
“I thought, ‘I need to pace myself here, I’ll be sleeping by 2.30pm. So, you learn quickly,” added Gary, who launched his own brand of wine in 2021.
This put him in perfect stead for the second series of the show, which airs on Friday, 11 April, and sees Gary tour Australia in search of its best wine, food and scenery.
For the new series, Gary is joined by famous pals such as Ronan Keating, Sophie Ellis Bextor, Danni Minnogue, Andi Peters and John Bishop. Reluctant to tell us who his favourite guest was while filming, Gary said, “I can’t answer that! Me and Ronan did have a lot of fun, though, that’s all I’m saying.”
Despite Gary touring Australia with his fellow Take That members, Howard Donald and Mark Owen, for months before, Gary said the bandmates had enough of each other by the time it came to filming his new show.
“It worked best logistically for us to do the band’s tour first, then everyone went home since we’d been on tour for 10 months, and I went around Australia again for the show. So, by that point, everyone had had enough. They all wanted to go home.”
The Take That singer was also joined by his daughter, Emily, who is studying Nutrition and Midwifery at University in Australia, for one episode of the show. From riding the waves through a forest in Queensland to touring the Sydney Royal Opera House and testing out the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Gary certainly saw the sights that Oz has to offer.
“It’s an amazing country,” he says of filming the show in Australia. “It’s vast and every state is different. it’s something new to offer and the wine was astounding throughout! My Australian friends, I’ve told them all the things I’ve done, and they were like, ‘We’ve never done that. So, I’ve done more than some of the Aussies have!”
Gary Barlow’s Food and Wine Tour: Australia begins on Friday at 2pm on ITV and ITVX.
