Disney World is in mourning following the loss of Gino the gorilla, a cherished member of the park since its inception. The theme park announced the passing of the 44-year-old endangered western lowland gorilla, the oldest in Animal Kingdom. In a heartfelt message on Facebook, Disney’s Animals, Science, and Environment expressed their sorrow, highlighting Gino’s impact on visitors and staff over his nearly 30-year tenure at Disney’s Animal Kingdom as a devoted father and troop leader.

Gino’s legacy includes 14 offspring, significant contributions to gorilla care and conservation globally, and lasting memories for all who encountered him. Despite not reaching his 45th birthday in December, Gino’s story will endure through his species’ future and the fond recollections of those who knew him. Animal Kingdom, where Gino resided at the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail in the Africa Pavilion, opened in Orlando, Florida, in 1998, attracting families who admired Gino’s chest-beating displays.

After the announcement of Gino’s passing, tributes poured in for the beloved gorilla, with many sharing cherished memories. Visitors and former keepers alike reminisced about their interactions with Gino, emphasizing his remarkable longevity compared to wild gorillas and the joy he brought to Animal Kingdom. Gino’s presence will be deeply missed by those who had the privilege of knowing him.
