Donald Trump had seemingly foreseen the outcome of the Nobel Peace Prize well ahead of time, as he had previously expressed skepticism about his chances due to his political beliefs. The prestigious award was ultimately bestowed upon Maria Corina Machado, a Venezuelan advocate for democracy and opposition leader, lauded by the committee as a fearless champion of freedom.

Both Machado and the US president were contenders among a pool of 244 individuals and 94 organizations vying for the honor. Despite being nominated, Trump had dismissed his own likelihood of winning, attributing it to the preference for liberal recipients. The 79-year-old had asserted his eligibility for the award, citing his role in resolving longstanding conflicts, including mediating between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Trump also asserted his involvement in peace initiatives in various other regions, such as India and Pakistan, Serbia and Kosovo, and Egypt and Ethiopia. He contended that despite his efforts, he did not anticipate receiving recognition for his contributions. Trump’s statements were conveyed via the social platform Truth Social, where he emphasized that public acknowledgment mattered more to him than any accolade.

Expressing disappointment at not being honored with the Nobel Peace Prize, Trump claimed he deserved the recognition multiple times for his involvement in resolving conflicts worldwide. He contended that his actions in various regions warranted the award, including his efforts in fostering peace in India and Pakistan.

Leading up to Machado’s victory, Trump actively promoted his own candidacy for the prize through social media posts and shared content. However, at the time of writing, he had not publicly reacted to the announcement of the winner.

The Nobel Peace Prize was officially awarded to Machado at the Norwegian Nobel Institute for her persistent advocacy for democratic rights in Venezuela and dedication to achieving a peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy. The committee emphasized that Machado’s efforts aligned with the criteria set by Alfred Nobel for the selection of peace prize laureates.

When asked about the decision to not award Trump the prize, Nobel Committee chairman Jorgen Watne Frydnes emphasized that the selection was based on Nobel’s principles. He highlighted the rigorous evaluation process undertaken by the committee, rooted in valor and integrity, to determine deserving recipients of the prestigious accolade.
