Offensive chanting at protests may face stricter measures as Keir Starmer suggested the possibility of additional restrictions. Shabana Mahmood recently proposed granting police new authority to prevent recurring demonstrations at the same location, following the arrest of nearly 500 individuals during a pro-Palestine march in London. Protesters defied the Prime Minister’s remark that holding rallies on the anniversary of the October 7 attacks was uncharacteristic of British conduct.

During his journey to Mumbai, Mr. Starmer expressed the need to address the collective impact of protests, prompting a broader assessment of available powers and their utilization by the Home Secretary. He emphasized the necessity to address certain chants heard at protests beyond the current measures in place.

Further discussions are underway with various police forces to evaluate policing strategies and potential enhancements to existing powers. Engagement with leaders of the Jewish community is also ongoing as part of the comprehensive review process.
